About the museum
The stone sacristy (kivisakasti) is a sacristy built of grey natural stone: a room of the church where the priest prepared for worship and where church objects were kept. According to the latest research, it was completed in the late 15th or early 16th century. Only the walls of the original sacristy have survived.
The city of Mikkeli became the owner of the building in 1897, when it was in poor condition. A thorough repair of the sacristy was carried out at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries to plans by architect Magnus Schjerfbeck. The roof resembles the roofs of medieval churches, although it was only completed in 1901, and on its ridge there is a small decorative tower, a kattoratsastaja (roof rider).
The Suur-Savon museoyhdistys (Greater Savo Museum Association) gathered objects from churches in Mikkeli and the surrounding areas in the early 1930s. These old objects are now displayed inside the sacristy. The site is part of the Mikkeli city museums and is open in summer.
