About the museum
Viestikeskus Lokki was the signals centre of the Defence Forces’ General Headquarters, which operated during the Continuation War in 1941–1944 in a cave blasted into the rock of Naisvuori in Mikkeli. The centre relayed the General Headquarters’ telephone calls and telegrams. In the neighbouring cave were a regional air surveillance centre, a German signals station and staff rest rooms, and the cave also housed offices for Commander-in-Chief Mannerheim and his closest subordinates.
The premises were restored to their wartime condition in the early 1990s and opened to the public in 1995. The site was kept as it was during the war. A video presentation about Lokki and equipment used in the centre are shown in the Muistin Päämajamuseo exhibition at the Sodan ja rauhan keskus (Centre for War and Peace).
The site is closed for the time being because of the safety risk caused by the crumbling of the cave roof. The site is looked after by the Mikkeli city museums.
