About the museum
The Nilsiä museum began its activities in 1977 in the grain barn (jyväaitta) of Simola farm. Later the museum moved to the main building of the farm, where the Nilsiä local heritage centre (Nilsiän kotiseutukeskus) operates today. On the same farm is also the summer theatre building of the Nilsiän Harrastajateatteri (Nilsiä Amateur Theatre).
The museum is maintained by the Nilsiän perinne- ja kulttuuriyhdistys (Nilsiä Heritage and Culture Association). The collections record and present Nilsiä’s cultural heritage through objects, photographs, videos and audio recordings. The objects tell of rural life, sport, music, education, handicrafts, local religious life and military history. The collections also include objects of the Itä-Suomen urheilumuseo (East Finland Sports Museum) and a replica of a mammoth tooth found at Tahkolahti.
The collections can also be browsed online in the eMuseo service, regardless of whether the museum is open.
