About the museum
The Finnish Settlement Museum opened in 2000 at Alapitkä in Lapinlahti. The museum is maintained by Asutusmuseosäätiö (Settlement Museum Foundation). It preserves the memory of the residents of the settlement farms, tells of farm life in the time before the information society, and honours the settlers who cleared the land after the wars.
Yrjö Mure came to Alapitkä as an evacuee from Salmi and in 1947 signed a land-tenure agreement for the Alaranta farm. He and his sister Anni lived on the farm until the 1970s. A memorial to the settlement movement was unveiled on 22 May 2010.
The farm’s buildings include the rintamamiestalo (front-veterans’ house), completed in 1952 and preserved in its original form, a cowshed with a loft, a lakeside sauna and a threshing barn where a summer café operates. The collection holds almost 2,000 original objects belonging to the Mure siblings, dating from the 1940s to the 1970s, including cooking, livestock and farming tools and horse-drawn field machinery. In summer there are hens in the farmyard, and there is a bathing beach next to the museum.
