About the museum
The main building of the Nurmo museum is the former Yli-Tepo, or Mäki-Tepo, farm, which stands in its original location near the Nurmonjoki river. The farm was donated to the Nurmoo Society as a local heritage museum in 1975, and since then buildings from various parts of Nurmo have been moved into the yard according to a plan by architect Pentti Penttilä. Mäki-Tepo’s two-hearth tuparati was built in 1796, and the oldest building in the museum area is a room for church services built in 1693 in the village of Soininkylä.
The museum area includes a luttirakennus, a liiveri, a smithy (paja), a small tupa, a kytökämppä, a barn (lato) and a vilja-aitta (grain storehouse), as well as a wartime splinter shelter. The buildings house objects from Nurmo that show local features, such as the casting industry and the Revivalist movement (herännäisyys).
In the upper floor of the main building are objects and material relating to the Nurmo Civil Guard (suojeluskunta) and the recent wars. The master’s room (isännänkamari) presents the revivalist heritage of Nurmo. The upper tupa is dedicated to Karelian settlers; the smithy presents the casting industry, and the barn in the yard has an exhibition called Taistelu vilua ja näläkää vastaan (Fighting Cold and Hunger). The museum is maintained by the Nurmoo-Seura ry society.
