About the museum
The history of Törnävä manor, originally Östermyra, reaches back more than two hundred years, to the final years of Swedish rule. Abraham Falander, a merchant from Vaasa, founded the Östermyra ironworks in the area in 1798, and the works operated until the 1870s. Later the estate owner Konstantin Törnudd gave the place the name Törnävä. In 1925 the area passed by will into the ownership of the municipality of Seinäjoki, and museum activities began in the area as early as the 1930s.
The outbuildings of the manor belong to the museum area. In Kivinavetta (stone cowshed) are the museum’s information desk, ticket sales and exhibition rooms: the ground-floor permanent exhibition Mihinä me ollahan? (Where Were We, Then?) tells the history of South Ostrobothnia and Seinäjoki, and upstairs is the Vinttigalleria (Attic Gallery) for changing exhibitions. The former workers’ dwellings, known as the Punatulkut (Bullfinches), have been furnished as a steward’s cottage, craftsmen’s workshops and a country pharmacy. The manor’s dairy building houses the nature and geology exhibition Keidas (Oasis).
The open-air museum area brings together farm buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries from various parts of the province, including the Liinamaa two-hearth farmhouse (tuparati) with its outbuildings and a windmill. The old village shop also conveys the atmosphere of earlier times. Visitors on the museum tour can also visit Törnävä manor, and guided tours are included in the admission ticket.
