About the museum
The Sairaalamuseo operates at Seinäjoen Piiri, in the grounds of the historic Törnävä mental hospital, in a building designed by architect Axel Mörne. The building was completed in 1928, originally for use as an institution for epileptics, and the park-like district grounds with their buildings have been well preserved in their original state.
The museum presents the history of South Ostrobothnian health care, from psychiatry to somatic medicine, as well as the activities of the Härmä hospital. Some 40 exhibition rooms tell, among other things, about South Ostrobothnian hospitals, the history of nursing, the treatment of childhood diseases, surgery, neurology and diseases that have been overcome. On the first floor there are rooms about the work of midwives and of children’s and internal medicine nurses; on the second floor the history of Törnävä hospital, various forms of psychiatric treatment, patients’ work and day activities, and isolation care are presented; and on the third floor, among other things, there are exhibitions on the Härmä tuberculosis sanatorium and a section on how staff and their families lived.
The Sairaalamuseo was founded in 1991 by the Etelä-Pohjanmaan terveydenhuollon perinneyhdistys (South Ostrobothnian Health Care Heritage Association), which maintained it until 2021. Since the beginning of 2022 the museum has been part of the Seinäjoki museums.
