About the museum
The Eräjärvi stone museum is a summer-opening museum in the churchyard of Eräjärvi, run by Eräjärvi-Seura ry. It was founded in 1974, and the experts involved were the geologists Ilkka Laitakari and Seppo I. Lahti.
The museum’s collection includes many Finnish and foreign rock and mineral specimens as well as precious and ornamental stones. The museum also has a gemstone chamber.
Eräjärvi is known for its diverse mineral deposits. According to Eräjärvi-Seura, the Viitaniemi feldspar quarry is one of the most mineral-rich sites in Finland, and day cards for the quarry are sold at the museum during opening hours. The other Eräjärvi quarries can be visited freely, and a quarry map can be bought at the museum.
