About the museum
The Eräjärvi church museum is located in Eräjärvi church in Eräjärvi, Orivesi. The present equal-armed cross church is Eräjärvi’s third wooden church and was consecrated for use in 1821. It was built by the local man Mats Åkergren. When the municipalities merged, the Eräjärvi parish was joined to the Orivesi parish in 1972, and the church and the museum are now maintained by the Orivesi parish.
The museum holds objects that are no longer in use and come from earlier Eräjärvi churches that have been demolished, the oldest of which date from the 18th century. Among the finest objects in the collection is an 18th-century hourglass that was on the edge of the pulpit; one of the most unusual is a wooden-handled urinal from the sacristy. On the floor is a multi-lock chest for keeping the church’s funds, and in the porch a collection box that was used there, fixed to the wall and floor. Also on display are wedding balls (vihkipallo) from the 18th and 19th centuries, and objects from the itinerant school (kiertokoulu), such as books, observation instruments, a slate ruler and a bead board (helmitaulu).
