About the museum
The Porilaismuseo was founded on 16 February 1990. Originally the museum operated in the old garrison hospital in the garrison area, but the building was demolished because of mould damage. The museum objects were in storage for seven years, until new exhibition premises were found in spring 2020 in the former premises of the officers' club (Päällystökerho) in the Huovinrinne garrison area.
The originator of the museum idea was the commander of the Pori Brigade, Olli Nepponen, during his term in 1988–1992, and Sergeant Major Olli Linden took responsibility for founding the museum and building the exhibitions. The museum's task is to convey knowledge of the history of the Pori Brigade, to cherish the traditions of the unit and to strengthen the will to defend the country.
The exhibitions are arranged in period-specific rooms covering the Pori Brigade and, at the same time, Finland's military history from 1626 to the present day. Only some of the museum's roughly 6,000 objects are on display. At one end of the club building are the heritage rooms, where the Pori Brigade's heritage property is kept. One of the most valuable donations in the collection is the silver-plated spurs of von Döbeln, donated by Marshal Mannerheim in 1938.
