About the museum
The Säkylän kotiseutumuseo is located in the centre of Säkylä on the shore of Lake Pyhäjärvi, in the Lehmuu area. The museum’s opening was celebrated on 8 September 1963, and the museum area has been built up one building at a time since 1962. The buildings were not originally on their present sites, but were moved to the area at different times.
The main building of the museum is the Mäntylä croft (torppa), comprising the main room (tupa), the pirtti (living room), the back room (peräkamari) and the porch (porstua). The area also includes, among other things, a loan storehouse built in 1833, which holds farm equipment and objects related to fishing; the pirtti of a smallholder (mäkitupalainen); a smoke sauna; storehouses; and a cattle shelter. The buildings mainly represent the building heritage of the 19th century.
The museum’s collecting of objects began in 1962, and the collection comprises about 1,200 objects, of which about a thousand are on display. Most of the objects are farming tools, and there are also textiles and books. The museum is owned and maintained by the municipality of Säkylä.
