About the museum
The Räisälä Foundation established the Räisälä Museum in 2004. The museum was initially in Kokemäki, and since 2014 it has been operating in the modern Räisälä Centre opened in Köyliö. The museum tells of the past and present of one parish of ceded Karelia, Räisälä, and above all of the people who had to leave their homes and adapt to a new life in present-day Finland.
Visitors are greeted by the bell of Räisälä church, which was evacuated from the church in the final phase of the Continuation War. The basic exhibition presents, through objects, texts and pictures, the stages of Räisälä from prehistory to the abandonment of the area, as well as the present day of Räisälä-Melnikovo. The exhibition also tells of the wars and evacuee journeys, and of the Räisälä folk high school and its founders.
The Räisälä Centre has an extensive library on the Karelian Isthmus and Räisälä, and a digital photo archive. Life on the frontier, migration and adaptation are themes that also appeal to people who are not descendants of Karelians.
