About the museum
The Säkylä Winter and Continuation War Museum was founded in 1990. The idea arose when props from the 1989 film Talvisota (The Winter War) were left over after filming. Museum curator Ilpo Nurmi had collected objects from various parts of Finland and the Soviet Union. Since 2007 the museum has operated in its own premises in the Köörnummi industrial area of Säkylä.
The museum’s collections include equipment from the Winter War and the Continuation War, weapons, uniforms and a considerable amount of material from the Civil Guard and the Lotta Svärd organisation. In the yard there is an assault gun (rynnäkkötykki) and other guns. The exhibition displays the work of the Lottas in nursing, air surveillance, food supply and canteens.
The exhibition aims to convey what the war meant for Finland and how the country came through it. The museum is run by a foundation, which restores its equipment and carries out small-scale research.
