About the museum
The Vampulan Kotiseutu- ja Museoyhdistys was founded on 8 November 1936, and the collection of objects began in 1938. The basis of the collection was old objects gathered by teacher K. S. Luukola for the Kukonharju elementary school. The objects were first shown at the Vampula agricultural show in 1939.
In 1941 the association bought the luhti building of the Viskilä croft, and the museum's main building was moved to its present site on the bank of the Loimijoki in 1945. The main building has a pirtti (cabin), a kamari (chamber), an entrance hall and a luhti section. Later a storehouse (1953), a smoke sauna (1954), a windmill (1954–1955), a suuli (1989) and a smithy (1992–1993) were moved to the site.
The collection includes about 1,200 objects, mainly household items, tools and agricultural implements up to the 1950s. Special items include the prow of a dugout canoe from the Stone Age or early Iron Age, and the Vampula national costume, whose design was begun in the 1930s.
