About the museum

The Tuiskula crofters’ museum began with the long-standing collecting of objects by the blacksmith F. J. Bärling. The Köyliö Museum Association (Köyliön museoyhdistys) was founded in 1934, and its first task was to find a home for the Bärling collections. The association bought a log building (luhti) from Rantala in Kankaanpää village, and the collections were moved into it. The log building is still the oldest part of the museum and holds about 600 old objects.

Later, more buildings were acquired for the museum area. Ojala croft is a log crofter’s dwelling from the 1860s, furnished as if its residents had just stepped out. Martta’s cottage, moved to the site in 2010, is a one-room cottage of a smallholder (mäkitupalainen). The workshop contains a forge that Bärling moved from a sauna in 1939, and the Pruuttakoppi (hose-drying hut) presents Tuiskula’s first fire station with hand and motor fire pumps. The soldier’s granary from Rintala dates from 1767.

The museum’s objects from the crofter era have accumulated over decades, and the museum’s catalogue now contains more than 2,000 items. The museum’s emblem is the päiväpulkka (day stick), a two-part wooden bookkeeping stick on which working days were marked. The museum area is also used by the Tuiskula Summer Theatre (Tuiskulan kesäteatteri).
