About the museum
The Rauhaniemen museo is one of the oldest local museums in South Savo. It continues the traditions of the museum founded in the 1930s in the church village of Sulkava, and today it is owned and maintained by the Municipality of Sulkava. The museum is a little under ten kilometres from central Sulkava and consists of an open-air museum area and a log drivers’ museum.
The main building of the open-air museum area is the smoke cabin of the Summala farm in Kyrsyänsalo, dating from the early 1800s. It was moved to the church village in 1936 as a local heritage museum, and in 1980 to its present location. A bedroom and a dairy room have been attached to the smoke cabin, forming a clover-leaf floor plan (apilanlehtipohja), which is rare in the province. The area also has storehouses, a smoke sauna, a cowshed and a stable. The buildings have been placed as they originally were at Summala, so the area corresponds to the state of a farm in the early 1900s, and the buildings are furnished in keeping with the period.
The log drivers’ museum is next to the open-air area, in a log drivers’ living room, that is, a log-floating cabin (uittopirtti), built in the 1850s by Metsähallitus. The living room was moved from Syrjäsaari in Lohilahti first to the area of Rauhaniemi school, and in 1995 to its present location. Its furnishings give a picture of life in the floating cabin in the 1940s and 1950s.
