About the museum
Baggen Museum operates in the merchant’s storehouse of Jumikkala manor in the church village of Rantasalmi. The place name has been known since the 1630s, and over time the property has been home to, among other things, a farm, a lieutenant’s residence, a trivial school, a roadside inn (kievari), a shop with gunpowder rights, a bank, a citizens’ school and a dentist’s surgery. In the 19th and 20th centuries the Bagge family also carried on wholesale trade with Russia.
The museum’s objects were collected in the 1980s and 1990s by the owner of the property, dentist Sisko Bagge. The museum was already open during culture days in the 1980s, and regular annual opening began in 2013.
The collections include handicrafts, clothing, tableware and tools dating from the 19th century, as well as material connected with shop and banking activities. Some objects come from Jumikkala, others from elsewhere. The oldest part of the main building dates from the 18th century, and the tupa (living room) was moved to its present site in the early 20th century. In the yard there are also granaries, a cellar and a stable.
