About the museum

The Rantasalmi museum opened to the public on 2 June 1963, and it is owned and run by the Municipality of Rantasalmi. The museum is located near the centre of Rantasalmi, along the road between Savonlinna and Varkaus. Most of the buildings were moved to the site in the early 1960s.

The main building comes from the Konttila farm and was donated by Maila and Pentti Taskinen. The oldest parts of the building are more than 200 years old. The room was originally a smoke cabin (savupirtti), and a box stove (pönttöuuni) used for heating was added in the early 20th century.

The main building has exhibitions on local cottage industry, shoemaking and the Rantasalmi letkuvarsipiippu (hose-stemmed pipe). A furnished country kitchen and bedroom are also on display. The grain storehouse holds tools for processing grain, flour and flax. The yard also has a windmill, a threshing barn, a fishermen’s net cabin, a sauna and a memorial to the writer Alpo Noponen. The Rantasalmi Tarinapaviljonki (Story Pavilion), built from old windows, tells local history and the stories of famous people from Rantasalmi.
