About the museum
The Säräisniemi local heritage museum is the only local heritage museum in the whole municipality of Vaala that presents local heritage. It is maintained by the Säräisniemen Museo- ja Kotiseutuyhdistys ry (Säräisniemi Museum and Local Heritage Association), founded in 1957. The museum operates in the premises of the oldest school building of the Säräisniemi parish.
The school building dates from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and was converted into a school in 1884. The yard also contains the Juusola windmill from the 1830s, the Säräisniemi grain storehouse from the 1860s and the Alila storehouse from the 1880s.
The museum’s basic collection was assembled from the villages of Vaala in the late 1950s, and it has been supplemented several times since. The collections include over 3,500 objects, which are displayed in the permanent exhibitions. In addition to exhibitions, the association organises lectures, events and local heritage excursions.
