About the museum
The history of the Riuttala farm goes back to 1657, when the farm is mentioned on the map of the provinces governed by Pietari Brahe. The farm remained in the same family at least from the 18th century onwards. Tahvo Ikäheimo took over the farm in 1820, and the Ikäheimo family managed Riuttala until 1975. All the present buildings were built during the Ikäheimo era, and the main manor building was completed in 1852.
In 1975 the farm passed to the Riuttalan talonpoikaiskulttuurin suojelusäätiö (Riuttala Peasant Culture Preservation Foundation). During the first summer the foundation bought most of the farm’s movable property, partly through donations, and in autumn 1975 the restoration of the farm to the appearance of the first decades of the 20th century began. The museum still represents this era. The Riuttala farmyard was chosen to represent Finnish rural life at the Paris World Exhibition of 1900.
The museum area covers 14 hectares and more than 20 buildings, including the main building, the blacksmith’s forge, a windmill and a large threshing barn. The main building is a double-tupa building (parituparakennus) typical of North Savo farms, built of notched logs. Most of the objects are original items once used on the farm.
