About the museum
Skärgårdsmuseet på Lappo in Brändö presents the traditional archipelago and fishing culture of Åland. Boats and life in the archipelago are closely linked: in the past, boats were sailed and rowed both on fishing trips and on journeys to town, and at the jetties in Finvik lay every conceivable kind of wooden boat.
The collections include about ten vernacular boats, among them the only surviving large boat on Åland. In everyday life, the boats were used by archipelago residents for fishing and hunting, for milking the cows on the islet, for carrying post and for trips to market. The museum has one of the more complete collections of old working boats in the Baltic Sea.
A permanent photo exhibition shows village life in former times. Next to the museum is a smithy restored to its original condition, which also houses a local heritage museum with a collection of historical tools.
