About the museum
The Hermas archipelago farmstead on Enklinge in Kumlinge is the last fully preserved farm group of old-fashioned character in the Åland archipelago. The farmstead has been known since the 16th century. The farms on Enklinge were burned in 1809 by royal order, and it is believed that the houses at Hermas were afterwards built on the old house foundations.
The farm includes about twenty buildings: main house, small cottage, farmhands' quarters, storehouse, maids' quarters, two log storehouses (härbren), portlider, stable, sheep house, privy, leaf barn, hay barn, cowshed, mill, cellar, pigsty and smoke sauna. Some buildings are free-standing and others are joined together. The houses are built of logs and partly clad with boards, and many fittings remain in place.
The people of Hermas were fisher-farmers who kept livestock and cultivated land for their own needs. Their direct income came from fishing, especially Baltic herring (strömming) fishing, and almost everything, from food and clothing to tools, was made on the farm.
