About the museum
The Suodenniemi local heritage museum is located in the centre of Suodenniemi, at Koippurinmäki in Pohjakylä, next to the church. The museum was founded in summer 1950 by the Suodenniemi Local Heritage Association, which moved to the hill a harakka-type windmill built in 1852 from the Yli-Kalhunmaa farm in Peräkunta village.
In 1960 a threshing barn from the late 18th century, brought from the Turppa farm in Taipale village, was erected on the site. The storehouse was built in 1713 and was donated by the municipalities of Lavia and Suodenniemi. The museum’s main building is a Satakunta double-tupa (paritupa), the former Lähteenmäki croft from Taipale village, built in 1888, which was moved to the museum area in winter 1987.
The collection contains more than 700 objects, mainly from agriculture and craftsmanship. A rarity is the homemade three-wheeled scooter of the postman Kalle Pohja, with which he carried mail between Pohjakylä and Putaja in the late 19th century. When the local heritage association ceased its activities, the museum was at first under the care of the Municipality of Suodenniemi, and in 2007 it passed to the management of the Sastamalan seudun museo (Sastamala Regional Museum). In the spacious yard, concerts and other events are held in summer, and the museum shop sells the work of local craftspeople.
