About the museum
The painter Emil Danielsson (1882–1967) first got to know Pirunvuori in 1903. After a study trip to Italy and Germany in 1904–1905, he decided to build a stone wilderness studio on the hill. Construction began in summer 1906, and the building was largely completed that autumn from stones obtained on the spot. The house was built without mortar, and its walls are about two metres thick. The interior was finished later, and the house was fully furnished by summer 1913.
Danielsson used the building as his summer studio and painted the scenery of Pirunvuori for decades. His family spent every summer there until 1964, and other artists also visited the site. Danielsson died in 1967.
The building was donated in 1975 to the Tyrvään seudun kotiseutuyhdistys (Tyrvää Local Heritage Association), and in 1990 it passed to the town of Vammala. Today the owner and maintainer is the City of Sastamala. An extensive restoration was carried out in 1997–1998, and Kivilinna was reopened in September 1998. It is open to the public in summer.
