About the museum
The forestry work museum is located in the Savivuori outdoor recreation area, close to the centre of Viitasaari. The central building of the museum area is the Väljänpökkö forest camp, which Metsähallitus built in 1940 in the Seläntaus forest area and which was moved to the museum area in 1964. The camp originally had one crew room, a kitchen and a housekeeper's room. Lahti Oy extended it with a second crew room in 1947, after which it could house almost 50 men.
The older part of the camp has been preserved in its original state, and the permanent exhibition of the museum is in the newer crew room, which was renovated in summer 1997. The horse stable was moved from the Mäntyjoki logging site and could hold 14 horses. The smoke cabin moved to Savivuori is the croft of the Laaja farm at Vuoskoski, and it was moved to the area in 1957. The area also has a granary built in 1641, from the Kokkola farm.
As a site of the Museokesä (Museum Summer), the museum is open in summer, and retired forestry professionals work at the museum. Not all Museokesä sites are open every summer.
