About the museum

The Pielaveden kotiseutumuseo was founded in 1958 at Teijunmäki. Teacher Oskar Pulkkinen had begun collecting museum objects as early as the 1930s, and merchant J. P. Nousiainen started promoting a local heritage museum project in 1940. The project gained momentum in 1947, when the Savolainen osakunta (Savo student nation) of the University of Helsinki donated money for founding the museum. A museum committee was set up in 1952, and a plot at Teijunmäki was rented from the parish as the site.

Pielavesi parish donated the old parsonage’s servants’ living room (väentupa) as the museum’s main building; it was moved to the museum area in 1958. A smoke cabin and a storehouse had already been moved to the area earlier and preserved as museum buildings. Among the oldest buildings is a fish storehouse (kala-aitta) from the 1700s, moved from Uurauta in Jylhänkylä village. The windmill was brought from Mieronmäki in 1961, a meadow storehouse (luhtiaitta) was moved to the area in 1962, and a threshing barn (riihi) was erected in 1983.

The permanent exhibition presents the craft heritage of the area and the various stages of life, from birth to death, and from everyday life to celebrations. Two smaller rooms contain the cobbler’s room and the parsonage bedroom (kammari), furnished in the spirit of the early 20th century, and the fish storehouse has an exhibition presenting fishing heritage.
