About the museum
The foundation of the Tammion kotiseutumuseo is an old log fishing cabin, which was moved from Koivuluoto island to Tammio in the early 1980s to serve as a museum building. The fishing cabin has since been extended, and in 1994 a separate new museum and library building was erected right next to it. A haapio built in Tammio was placed in the new building.
The museum objects include many items related to fishing and seal hunting, as these were the island’s main livelihoods. There are also objects from seafaring, farming and the history of the island’s school, as well as from the era of pirtu (home-distilled spirits) smuggling.
