About the museum
Kuorsalo is an island in the eastern Gulf of Finland, which now belongs to Hamina. Viking-age graves have been found on the island, and it later became known as an island of pilots. Besides piloting, the livelihoods were fishing, seal hunting, boatbuilding and shipping. The island was emptied of its residents in the 1960s.
The museum is housed in the youth society building, which is more than a hundred years old and is owned by Kuorsalo-Seura ry. An attempt to open the museum in 1953 failed because of unsafe premises. A new opportunity came with a donation from Pertti Lomm: he gave the objects he had collected in Eerikkilä, Virolahti, to Kuorsalo-Seura, and the museum opened in 2002 in a locked room partitioned off inside the house. The collection includes more than 600 objects, some from Virolahti but most from Kuorsalo.
