About the museum
The Vuolukivimuseo is located in the Kivikylä of Nunnanlahti in Juuka, where soapstone has been quarried for more than a hundred years. Exploitation of the Nunnanlahti deposit began in the late 19th century, and the stone has been shipped to major cities around the world and used in prestigious buildings in Helsinki. Quarrying was initially done by hand, by manpower.
The museum displays early-20th-century tools for quarrying and working soapstone, such as chisels, drill bits, stone saws and stone transport carts. A short mining-history walking trail leads from beside the museum building; at its start is the memorial to the 1912 Nunnanlahti mine accident. From the trail one can also see an old open-pit quarry, partly filled with water.
