About the museum
The Abri du Marin on the Île de Sein is part of the network of shelters created by Jacques de Thézac, an ethnographer and photographer, who wanted to offer Breton fishermen a plain place to stay. The island’s first shelter opened around 1900. It proved too small, so a second building was constructed in 1906, with recreation rooms, a sail-repair workshop and a caretaker’s flat. The façade, the roofs and the remains of the boiler of this building have been listed as Monuments historiques since 2007.
The building now houses a museum run by the municipality. The route covers three themes: life in earlier times on the island, in the room devoted to Jacques de Thézac; sea rescue and underwater archaeology, in the former SNSM shelter; and the Resistance of the Sénans during the Second World War, upstairs. There are also films shot on the island, books, old photographs and paintings.
