About the museum

The museum is the successor of the AGRIVAP museum. In 1979, enthusiasts came together in an association called “Les Amis de la Machine Agricole et à Vapeur” to preserve machines from the rural and industrial world of the first half of the 20th century, as well as the steam micro-power station of the former Schrott sawmill. With the support of the town of Ambert, a first exhibition was a real success and led to the opening of the museum in 1981, with a steam engine hall, a threshing hall and a tractor hall.

In 1995, the Atelier des Tresseurs opened a space dedicated to Ambert's local crafts, completed in 2000 by the rosary room. In 2013, the original association separated the museum's activities from the tourist train. A new association took over the museum, refocusing its theme on energy, and gave it the name Mus'Energie.

The museum occupies nearly 1,600 m² in typical industrial buildings from the 1920s and offers four exhibition areas: the steam micro-power station, the steam energy room, the energy hall and the local crafts area. Around twenty machines are set in motion during the visit.
