About the museum

The Musée des beaux-arts de Beaune opened in 1871 in the town hall, starting from the municipal library and thanks to its curator Jules Pautet. It remained there until 2001. In 2001–2002 it moved into the Porte Marie de Bourgogne, where it still is.

During the Second World War the works were sheltered at Châteauneuf. Among the curators who shaped the museum were Hippolyte Michaud, Émile Goussery and René André, who reorganised it in 1946.

The collections range from the archaeology of the Pays beaunois, from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages, to modern and contemporary art. They include Flemish and Dutch paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries, 18th-century French art, and a group devoted to Orientalism and to Félix Ziem, who was born in Beaune. The museum reopened on September 19, 2026 with a trail focused on its permanent collections, including recently acquired or restored works.
