About the museum
The Musée du Vin de Bourgogne was founded in Beaune in 1938 on the initiative of winegrower and mayor Roger Duchet. It was first set up in the old belfry. In 1946 the museologist Georges Rivière and the ethnologist André Lagrange moved it into the former Hôtel des ducs de Bourgogne.
This 14th-century palace, situated between the Rue d’Enfer and the Rue Paradis, served as the seat of the Parlement de Bourgogne from 1354. After 1478 it became the Logis du Roi. It was sold to private owners in 1566, then bequeathed in 1919 to the Académie française, which gave it to the City of Beaune. It has been a listed historic monument since 1924.
The route traces twenty centuries of Burgundy’s vineyard history, from antiquity to the 1920s, and highlights the Climats of the Burgundy vineyard, which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The collections include tools, wine presses from the 16th to 19th centuries, bottles, tastevins, earthenware, glassware, amphorae, prints, posters and Aubusson tapestries related to the vine. The old presses are displayed in the cuverie (wine-making hall), whose roof frame dates from the 16th century.
At the time of this research, the City of Beaune states that the museum is closed to the public, without announcing a reopening date.
