About the museum
The Musée du Pays de Sarrebourg presents the archaeological heritage and the history of the town and its region. It is housed in a contemporary building designed by the architect Bernard Desmoulin: three elongated volumes in concrete and copper, a large stone staircase and a looped route lit from above. The ground floor is devoted to local archaeology, and the first floor to the more recent history of Sarrebourg. More than 150 pieces of faience and porcelain from Niderviller complete the display.
The museum is part of the Parcours Chagall with the Chapelle des Cordeliers, a few minutes away. The building dates from the 13th century: the Cordeliers convent was founded in 1265 by Godefroy de Bliescastel, and the church became the chapel. After the Revolution the convent was turned into barracks; from 1927 it housed the museum of the Société d'histoire et d'archéologie.
In 1970, only the chancel of the chapel was still standing. The mayor of the time, Pierre Messmer, obtained from Marc Chagall a large stained-glass window to close this chancel. Entitled La Paix, the work is about 12 metres high and 7.5 metres wide; it was made between 1974 and 1976 by Charles Marq in the Simon workshop in Reims. In the museum, a tapestry from 1994, woven by Yvette Cauquil-Prince after the same composition, extends the experience of this work.
