About the museum
Georges Mazoyer was born in 1925 in Marseille. At a very young age he dived in the Mediterranean, then explored the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. Trained at the Beaux-Arts, he became a painter inspired by the seabed. In 1955 he set up his studio in Ansouis, in a 16th-century building whose first floor he restored.
On May 17, 1975, he opened his works and collections to the public. The museum occupies vaulted rooms in the medieval style, where corals, shells and fish gathered over some forty years are displayed, along with paintings, ceramics and stained glass on the underwater world.
The first-floor studio has kept the atmosphere of a Provençal house, with a large fireplace, a view over the plain, the artist's easel and painting table. A book about the life of Georges Mazoyer and his museum, written by Nicole Le Drean (2023), is on sale on site.
