1. Deutsches Polizeioldtimer-Museum
Club-run museum in Marburg with more than 110 historic police vehicles – open on selected Sundays between April and October, free admission.
About the museum
The foundation was laid by eight officers of the Marburg police directorate who founded the Polizei-Motorsport-Club Marburg in 1990. Originally the idea was a motorcycle squad for public demonstrations, but as early as 1991 the first historic patrol car joined the club: a 1958 Opel Rekord P1 restored by the members themselves. The collection grew quickly, partly because the Hessian Ministry of the Interior handed over decommissioned state police vehicles.
In 2000 the club celebrated the founding of its museum. In 2001 it was able to acquire a former German army (Bundeswehr) base in Marburg-Neuhöfe; on the site of about 23,000 square meters, three vehicle halls, a workshop, a storage facility, and the clubhouse were built. In July 2003 the museum of automotive police history officially opened.
Today the collection of more than 110 vehicles from some seven decades is considered the largest of its kind in Germany. It ranges from the tiny BMW Isetta to a heavy water cannon on a Mercedes-Benz chassis, along with BMW police motorcycles of the club's own motorcycle squad. The museum is run by volunteers and opens on only a few Sundays a year. The vehicles also regularly appear at classic car events and in film and television productions.
