About the museum
The museum building was erected on a plot donated by the city for the 400th anniversary of the Philipps University and opened on July 30, 1927. It is still the only building in Marburg built specifically as a museum. It was financed with the help of citizens, companies and associations.
The collection grew out of the "Hessische Altertümer" (Hessian antiquities) and a cast collection of ancient sculptures. A separate art collection with paintings from the early modern period to modernism was added, including works by Otto Ubbelohde and the Willingshausen painters. After 1945, the Hamann collection, donations from Rainer Zimmermann and the Hilde Eitel collection expanded the holdings with 20th-century art.
Since 1981, when the cultural history collection moved into the Landgrafenschloss, the house has developed into an art museum. After a renovation financed by donations, it reopened in October 2018.
