About the museum
The Marburg cast collection goes back to a suggestion by the classical philologist Curt Wachsmuth in 1866: professors were to put the proceeds of public evening lectures into a fund, from which plaster casts of ancient sculptures were bought. The first director was Ludwig von Sybel, who in 1877 became the first professor of archaeology in Marburg. From 1878 the casts stood in the former commandery of the Teutonic Knights next to the Elisabethkirche.
Sybel also began building the original collection in 1878; his successor Paul Jacobsthal brought it almost to its present size by 1935. In 1927 the cast collection moved into the Ernst-von-Hülsen-Haus, built for the university's 400th anniversary; in 1975 it was opened to visitors again for the first time after World War II. The originals were long stored under the roof and accessible only to students and staff, until they were re-displayed in 2013 on the third floor of Biegenstraße 9.
Today the cast collection comprises around 570 casts of Greek and Roman sculptures. The antiquities collection includes over 2,700 objects, among them ceramics, glass, clay and bronze figurines, coins, gems and a few sculptures. Both collections serve primarily teaching and research. At present, they are not open to the public because of construction and renovation work.
