Art association in the Marburger Kunsthalle on Gerhard-Jahn-Platz with changing exhibitions of contemporary art and an art lending library – free admission.
Double exhibition featuring multilayered abstract oil painting by Viola Bittl and sculptures by Finnish artist Hanna-Maria Hammari made of ceramics, steel, wood and found objects.
Painting that breaks open the classic picture format: Reinbothe compresses canvases, exposes or breaks stretcher frames, and thereby probes the limits of the panel painting.
About the museum
The association emerged in 1953 from a circle of artists in which Marburg artists such as the painter Franz Frank had come together after World War II to create opportunities for exchange and exhibitions; its co-founders also included Eugen Siebecke, who later became mayor. In 1958 the Kunstverein moved into its first exhibition building at Am Markt 16 in the Oberstadt (upper town), which was expanded by an upper floor in 1978.
In 2000 it moved into the new building the city had erected on the site of the former slaughterhouse on Gerhard-Jahn-Platz. The Marburger Kunsthalle offers about 525 square meters of exhibition space on two floors; the foyer houses the office, the Artothek (art lending library) and a reference library.
Supported by around 600 members, the Kunstverein shows several temporary exhibitions every year – sometimes young, sometimes established artists, thematic shows, art from the region or work by art school students. The Artothek, started in 1984, comprises several hundred works of contemporary art that members can borrow for a few months. There is also a concert series of experimental music and art trips for members.
