About the museum
Until 1984, horses were shod in the Schwaikheim forge on Burgstraße, iron tires were fitted to wooden wagon wheels, and all iron parts for carts were made here. Mattocks, picks, spades, shovels and scythes were also repaired here, and nails were forged.
In 1988 the municipality bought the property and handed the forge over to the Heimatverein Schwaikheim (local heritage association). Since then it has served as a smithing museum, one of the few of its kind in Germany. The workshop and the old tools are on show; visitors can watch the work at the forge fire, have the old craft explained to them, or forge something themselves from the hot iron.
