About the museum

The Stadtmuseum Winnenden is housed in a section of the medieval town fortifications: the gate tower, whose passage, known as the Schwaikheimer Tor, was once the main entrance to the old town. The masonry, together with remnants of the town wall, is among the oldest surviving building fabric in the town; the tower was probably built during the construction of the wall in the second half of the 13th century. After the devastating town fire of 1693, the half-timbered upper floors were rebuilt in the early 18th century.

The four tower rooms show evidence of the town's origins and its historical highlights up to the emergency money issued in 1923. In addition, there is a fully furnished prison cell, clockworks, a roof tile collection, objects from guild and trade history, old engravings and views, and a model of the old town around 1850. On the top floor is the gate room, with a view over the roofs and streets of the inner town.
