About the museum
The museum's origins go back to 1958, when the Winnenden fire brigade first displayed old pictures, certificates and equipment in the training room of its new fire station. In the following years the volunteers saved more and more decommissioned firefighting equipment and wagons from the scrapyard. A well-attended exhibition on the open day in 1963 led the town to provide rooms in the former pump house, the Kastenschule; in the autumn of 1963 a first museum opened there on 250 square metres.
Because only a fraction of the holdings could be shown, in 1983 the town acquired the goods shed at the station, which the Royal Württemberg State Railway had built in 1875 and which is now a listed building. After conversion, the new, considerably larger fire brigade museum opened on 1 June 2002 in the shed's timber structure.
From 2007 the museum association planned an extension, which was begun in 2011 and inaugurated on 1 February 2013. Today the exhibition covers around 2,000 square metres: from leather buckets and hand-operated pumps through breathing apparatus and alarm technology to a large collection of German and foreign fire helmets. The extension houses 13 vintage vehicles, including a 1924 Benz Gaggenau and a 1938 Magirus turntable ladder. The museum is run by volunteers from the association Feuerwehrmuseum Winnenden.
