About the museum
The Weißenhorn Archaeological Collection goes back to Hans Burkhardt, who founded it in 1987. In the following years, history enthusiasts recovered finds from the ground in the town and its surroundings at every opportunity, so that a museum of its own was able to open as early as 1989 on the upper floor of Schulstraße 4, the former agricultural school. In 1991 the collection passed into the ownership of the town; since then the town of Weißenhorn has run the museum at its original location together with the Förderkreis Archäologische Sammlung (support association).
The exhibition sees itself as a complement to the town history collection of the local history museum and displays evidence from many periods: Stone Age tools, remains from Roman times, and everyday objects from the Middle Ages and early modern period, including a great deal of ceramics. Special pieces include parts of Weißenhorn's first water pipeline from the 16th century, fragments of the collapsed parish church, early coins minted under Anton Fugger at the Weißenhorn mint, and a medieval gravestone from Attenhofen with a Hebrew inscription on its reverse.
