About the museum
The Hermann-Köhl-Museum commemorates the honorary citizen of Pfaffenhofen an der Roth, the aviation pioneer Hermann Köhl (1888–1938). Born in Neu-Ulm, Köhl was the first to fly nonstop from Europe across the North Atlantic to America, in April 1928, together with Ehrenfried Günther Freiherr von Hünefeld and James Fitzmaurice, in the “Bremen”. After landing on Greenly Island, the crew was celebrated at home and abroad. Köhl then devoted himself to the development of civil aviation.
The memorial was first set up in 1960 at the Hermann-Köhl-Schule. Senior teacher E. Fischer designed and looked after it in memory of the honorary citizen. Köhl died in Munich in 1938 and was buried in Pfaffenhofen.
Today the collection is housed in the foyer of the town hall on Kirchplatz. Newspaper reports, photographs, decorations, a flying helmet and documents show the ocean flight and the life of the pilot. The market municipality of Pfaffenhofen maintains and expands the collection to preserve the memory of the aviation pioneer for future generations. Further information, pictures and historical reports on the ocean flight are provided by a separate website about Hermann Köhl.
