About the museum
The Premonstratensian monastery of Roggenburg goes back to a foundation by three brothers of the Bibereck counts in 1126. Canons from Ursberg Monastery set up a provostry, which quickly rose to become an abbey and attained full imperial immediacy. Over the centuries a magnificent monastic complex developed. With secularization, the canons had to leave the imperial abbey, and the extensive complex nearly fell into ruin. In the 1980s the Premonstratensians returned and began the reconstruction.
In 1991 the Landkreis Neu-Ulm opened the Klostermuseum in the former rooms of the provostry. It gives an overview of the history of the monastery and of the Premonstratensian order, from its founding to its violent dissolution, and makes many art treasures, above all from the Baroque period, publicly accessible that had long been kept in closed rooms.
Most of the exhibits come from the estate of the last imperial prelate, Abbot Thaddäus Aigler, who in 1822 bequeathed them to the poor fund of the Roggenburg parish with the request to keep them together in one place. Special objects from the monastery and its churches bring to life the Baroque period, the almost forgotten popular piety and the order history of the Premonstratensians.
