About the museum
The Museum Herxheim presents two main themes across more than 400 square meters: the Stone Age and the history of the village. The focus is on the Linear Pottery culture (Bandkeramik), the culture of the first farmers in Central Europe around 7,000 years ago.
Excavations since the 1990s have revealed a settlement near Herxheim with a double ditch ring, where hundreds of people were killed and dismembered in a ritual event. The finds and their interpretation form the core of the exhibition.
The village's history over the past centuries covers, among other things, weaving and tobacco cultivation. The museum garden and the Historarium with dioramas complement the visit; at the find site, about 2 km away, a reconstructed longhouse also stands.
