Temporarily closed
Temporarily closed. The exhibition has been closed since 2023 due to renovation and conversion of the museum building; no date has been set yet for the reopening with a new permanent exhibition. The administration can be reached Tue–Fri 9 a.m.–12 p.m.

About the museum

The museum's core consists of the collections of local historian August Bachmann (1893–1983), who as a young man was already gathering finds and testimonies of the earth's and humankind's history in his home region. From 1929 he displayed parts of them in his house. As the holdings continued to grow, the then district of Bremervörde provided rooms in the former archiepiscopal chancery building, the oldest structure in the town and the last surviving part of Bremervörde Castle. There the Kreisheimatmuseum opened in October 1960, and in 1985 it was named Bachmann-Museum in honor of its founder.

Since 2001 the museum has been run by the Stiftung Bachmann-Museum Bremervörde, which Bachmann's daughter Elfriede Bachmann founded together with the town of Bremervörde and the district of Rotenburg (Wümme). The collection comprises around 80,000 objects from geology, natural history, archaeology, history and folklore and is considered one of the most extensive for the region. The previous permanent exhibition showed about 800 pieces, including the roughly 4,600-year-old disc wheel from Gnarrenburg-Karlshöfen, the Bremervörde bog body and two whale skeletons about twelve million years old.

The exhibition has been closed since 2023 because the district is renovating the listed chancery and stable building. The objects have been moved out; a new central depot is being built in Bremervörde for them. After the renovation, a newly designed permanent exhibition is to tell the history of the central Elbe-Weser Triangle from the earth's history to the present.
