About the museum
The Kartoffelmuseum in Brillit, a district of Gnarrenburg in the Elbe-Weser triangle, is housed in an approximately 150-year-old potato barn next to a centuries-old oak. The listed building was renovated and converted into a museum, which has existed since 1996. It is cared for by the Kultur- und Heimatverein Brillit e. V., whose members maintain the house and thus preserve a piece of local history.
On display are agricultural machines from potato farming in the postwar years, including planting machines and a sorting machine. Also shown are household appliances around the potato, as well as documentation about the potato. A regional focus is the high-moor potatoes: farmers in the area spent years breeding and refining varieties such as Belana, Bernadette, Annabelle, Leyla, Exquisa or Linzer Delikatess for various uses.
The interior of the barn is accessible only on special occasions and by arrangement, such as on the Museumstag on Ascension Day and on the Tag des offenen Denkmals (Open Monument Day). On those days the association also offers dishes made from regional potatoes. The outdoor grounds are accessible at all times.
