About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Malmsheim opened in 1991 in the old village center of Renningen-Malmsheim, near the church, town hall, and communal bakehouse. It is housed in a converted barn that belonged to a farmstead. The collection was founded by the collector Fritz Häfner, and the museum is run by the Heimatverein Rankbachtal (local heritage association).
The permanent exhibition is spread over three floors and a vaulted cellar. It shows the working and living world of earlier generations, with a focus on agriculture, crafts, and home life: tools from hand implements to an early tractor, workshops for about a dozen trades, a fully furnished kitchen, a bedroom, a washing area, and the "Gute Stube" (parlor) moved from a village mayor's house. The third floor, completed in 1994, covers weaving, beekeeping, and tailoring, among other topics.
Since 2015, a separate area has documented the history of the Malmsheim airfield site with eight display panels, from the 1930s through postwar use and the Bundeswehr base to today's research campus. The museum also has a museum garden and a virtual museum online.
