About the museum
The museum is housed in the listed Bruckbaustadel (bridge-building barn) at the Inn bridge in Rosenheim. A building on this spot is already recorded in Philipp Apian's Bavarian map of 1560, and in 1662 it is first mentioned as the electoral bridge-building barn. From 1938 it served hydraulic and river engineering, and remained in use as a building barn until 1982.
Conversion into a museum began in 1984, and the museum opened on 21 April 1986. It shows the hydraulic engineering and navigation collection of the Rosenheim Water Management Office, founded in 1949 by chief river master Franz Thaler.
The exhibition covers, among other things, torrent control through the centuries, the shipbuilding trade, a faithful model of a 15-metre-long Plätte (flat-bottomed river boat) and items from the time of the Royal Bavarian river supervision service. The park-like open-air area on the Inn displays further objects, such as a reconstructed 19th-century cement Plätte and works of art.
